Newton is the sitting Mayor of Wilton Manors and is running for a commission seat rather than for re-election as Mayor. He served as a City Commissioner from 2000 to 2018 and previously sat on the Planning and Zoning Board. He has run an upholstery business, Quality Interiors, since 1981.
He has campaigned on institutional knowledge and continuity, responsiveness to constituents including a willingness to change a vote based on resident input, and infrastructure — water costs, sewer repairs and environmental hazards from leaking pipes. He has also spoken about balancing development density against resident preference while protecting the tax base, and about advocacy for the LGBTQ community.
OutSFL reported that Newton has not publicly explained why he is moving from the mayor’s seat to a commission seat. We found no Wilton Manors term-limit provision that would require the move. It is on our questionnaire.
